Labour MP speaks out against the benefits culture!

Those of you that follow Glasgow South MP, Tom Harris' blog, will know that he can be an acquired taste but recently he has shown signs that he has a "sensible head" and is prepared to debate in a relatively non-party political way on a number of fundamental issues that he has himself dubbed as 'important to Daily Mail readers'.

So his article in the Mail on Sunday today comes as no surprise. I applaud him for having the guts to write it and I commend you to read it too.

You can also link to his blog HERE - but I warn you that you won't agree with everything he pontificates upon - and he does pontificate at times! The comments are usually entertaining, though.

Don't fall for it Ted. This is about self promotion. He has a safe seat and so has nothing to fear.

He was sacked by Brown and is no threat to anyone.

What are you saying that this astute man has just discovered there is a problem with single mothers!

He IS stating the obvious. We all know what he's talking about...it's just a little late in the day to mention it, isn't it? Perhaps he wants a tufty badge.

No, I'm not saying that he is another IDS, Peter Lilley, John Redwood or, perhaps, Frank Field. He hasn't got the intellectual ability to think these things for himself.

You're right that he is now in "self-promotion" phase. He is obviously trying position himself as a Labour 'pundit' like Denis McShane so he can make a lot of money appearing on the media.

But what he is saying is something that the Conservatives can use to their advantage over the coming months.

The reason I have "bigged him up" is that anyone who might read your and my blogs who don't know him might realise how shallow and fatuous he is.

(Oh, and by the way, I have a bit of history with him not publishing my comments! For example, saying that with a 10,000 plus majority they could put a pig up in his place and it would increase it!)

Interesting takes from "Events" and you, Ted — in your case going from a "big up" to putting a pig up(!)

I'd be inclined to gently play along with Harris for now, adding him to the list of apparent dissenters, which could be useful to enlist one day…

Actually, re-reading my last comment, I realise that I really meant "to list one day". Enlist has another meaning, and I don't think most of them would cross the floor.
